Signs You Have an Ice Dam on Roof

The roof on your home withstands a great deal.  It acts as a shield so you experience safety and comfort year round.  However, your home’s eaves and soffits are victim to impacts of an ice dam.  An ice dam is an accumulation of ice that freezes onto your eaves, gutters, and soffits.  This ice growth creates a blockage on your roof as it tries to roll melted ice down to the ground.

Just like a clogged pipe, an ice dam is a clog that turns your roof into an area with standing water.  The more an ice dam goes unaddressed the increase in internal home damage can ensue.  Signs you have an ice dam on roof include:

  • Icicles Along the Eaves or Soffits of the Home
If you notice an excessive amount of icicles surrounding the edges of your roof, this could be due to the blockage caused by an ice dam.

  • Water Spots in Ceiling or Interior Leaking
Inside your home, if you see any signs of water spots or leaking in your ceiling or walls, it may not be a plumbing issue, but rather, water from the roof finding its way into the house.  Either way, Vector has the ice dam removal and plumbing team to identify the cause and repair the issue.

  • Thick Ice Along the Roof’s Edge
In addition to seeing icicles, you may notice a thick icy border along the roof’s edge, especially accumulating in your gutters.  If you see this, this could be an ice dam and it’s creating a wall preventing water from traveling down your roof properly.

  • Ice Filled Gutters
As you see thick ice along the roof’s edge, this could subsequently impact your gutters.  As the ice builds up in this area, it can ultimately cause gutter damage.  If you see thick ice along the roof’s edge coupled with gutter damage, you could have an ice dam problem.

  • Moldy or Musty Odors in Attic or Upper Walls
As water builds up on your roof, it can begin to seep through holes and crevices that enter into the inner structure of your home.  As moisture festers it begins to mold and develop unpleasant odors.  If you smell any mold or mustiness in your home, there could be water coming from the roof into your home due to an ice dam.

If you see one or more of these symptoms, give Vector Services a call for a free estimate so we can identify the cause and solution to your ice dam issue.
